Our History
REIKE is a Kenyan Holding Company, resulting from a long-lasting partnership between the Cavalum Group and Pedro Villas-Boas, which are both Portuguese entities.
Cavalum is a promoter, installer, and operator of electrical power projects. It has gained strong experience among the three main renewable energy sources for more than 25 years and is already established in three different continents.
Pedro Villas-Boas is a senior electrical engineer, whose expertise is essentially linked to hydropower plants since the ’80s. In the early 2000s, he extended his activity to wind energy.
Both partners are therefore long connected to the energy area, both with a strong engineering background. In 2017, they invested in a Kenyan company in order to develop renewable power projects in Kenya, with a special focus on hydroelectric projects.
Over the years, they made technical decisions based on very precise criteria of profitability, always looking for more rational and economic technical solutions.
With a restless and entrepreneurial spirit, they have excelled in the constant enrichment of their vocation for engineering. That is why hydropower projects were and are always seen as interesting challenges for this group of investors.
Following investments in hydropower projects conceived in the late 1980/1990s, the partners embraced the wind power challenge in several joint projects in the early 2000s, where the largest national operators already had some interest.
At the same time, they initiated research and implemented photovoltaic technology, which few believed could be an alternative solution to fossil sources. They consequently became pioneers in the installation of the largest photovoltaic plant in Iberia at the time, at the forefront of European investment in PV Renewable Energies.
Today REIKE’s shareholders are still mentoring projects in operation, not leaving the development side.
In short, the REIKE sponsors have decades of experience in developing and operating hydro, wind, and pv solar electric plants.
- More than 50 units / 400MW developed in the 3 main renewable sources (hydro, wind, and solar pv)
- More than 35 units in operation running simultaneously in Portugal, Spain, and France
At the moment, REIKE has a portfolio of two advanced licensing stage hydropower projects, that we can summarize as follows :
Ndanu Falls
- Run-of-river hydro project
- 9,5MW
- Land already acquired by SPV
- 20 year PPA with KenGen (indexed)
- Total investment: 21M USD
- Estimated production: 46GWh
- PPA tariff: 82,5 USD/MWh
- Turnover: 3,8M USD
- Ready to build Q2 2021
Sagana I and II
- Two run-of-river hydro projects
- 2x 20MW
- Land aquisition ongoing
- 20 year PPA with KenGen (indexed)
- Total investment: 2x 35M USD
- Estimated production: 2x 92,5GWh
- PPA tariff: 82 USD/MWh
- Turnover: 7,6M USD x2
- Ready to build 2nd half 2021
